Question

Your friend Jill is handling the testing for the new accounting system, and right now she is very upset about the most recent results. “It seems like every time we fix one thing, another issue pops up! After ten days of testing and adjusting, we are meeting over 90% of the goals and benchmarks. If we’re looking for perfection, we’ll never make the implementation deadline for the new system, and the users will be all over us. Not to mention top management’s reaction to a delay. I’m sure we can resolve some of these issues after the system becomes operational.” How would you respond to Jill? Are ethical issues involved? What are your responsibilities, as an employee, as an IT professional, and as a friend?

Explanation / Answer

AS AN EMPLOYEE:

Under the ethics of an employee, an employee's prime focus must be to take care of people's health, welfare and safety. If something or some decision or some work by a person or an employee may lead to harm to the client or employer, then the employee should report it to the higher authority, so that they can take the necesaary action to eliminate the harm which may be caused due to the fault.

AS AN IT PROFESSIONAL:

As an IT professional, firstly, the person should advice Jill to look for the possible causes of the fault. If, even then the fault remains there, the IT professional can try to find and rectify the problem by himself/herself. If every thing gors right, than there is no need to mention the issues to the higher or top management.

AS A FRIEND: As a friend, the person firstly should try to help resolving the issues with system. The person can help in testing if he/she has the knowledge in that particular field. If not, then the person can ask some other person, who is expert in that field and is trustworthy also to help Jill. The expert must be trustworthy here, so that he/she doesn't disclose the issue to the top management, which would probably let Jill loose her job.

Here, obviously the ethical issues are involved. Based on the ethics of an employee, an IT professional and a friend, the person has multiple options on how to react in this scenario.
