Question

(((((((((((((((((((((((((Please Help Me Complete with the Following))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Scenario:

~In October 2007, a jury ordered Jammie Thomas, 32, from Minnesota, to pay $220,000 for offering to share 24 specific songs online - a cost of $9,250 per song.

~In a retrial in June 2009, a jury ruled that Thomas must pay $1.92 million, or $80,000 on each of the songs because she willfully violated the copyright laws.

Exercise:

Think about whether it was ethical for Jammie Thomas to download songs without paying for them and then share them. Keep in mind that a jury found that it was illegal for her to do that. Do you think it was ethical for the Recording Industry Association of America to bring these lawsuits against her? Keep in mind that it was certainly legal for them to do so. (Explain in 100-150 words)

Explanation / Answer

It was not ethical for Jammie Thomas to download the songs in the first place without paying for them as it is illegal and then adding more to it she shared them online. These type of acts hurt sales because it allows people to get music for free instead of paying for recordings in stores. It was not ethical to for the Recording Industry Association of America to bring these lawsuits against her with such a large amount that she may not be able to pay in her entire lifetime. They could have penalized her with a lesser amount so that she would have used the legal downloading route in the future but penalizing with such a huge amount certainly, goes against the ethics.

Even if it is legal for the industry to file lawsuit against her as she has broken the laws but demanding such a compensation is completely unethical.
