Explanation / Answer
1) Demonstrate your understanding of IT infrastructure by answering the following questions :
a) What characteristic makes technology services unique from the other IT components?
Ans: Any Technology Service gives the total solution for the given Job. The service provider makes the complete infrastructure to deliver the service to the customer as well as maintenance. Customer only uses the service without taking the ownership and responsibility.
b) Define "infrastructure" as it relates to company computers.
Ans: A company requires many computers (PCs and Work Stations) to do the business and all computers need to be interconnected through a network (LAN/WAN). To manage the network efficiently company needs a server station. This complete setup is called IT infrastructure.
c) Which do you think has more problems working correctly, hardware or software? Why?
Ans: Both hardware component and software component have their own dedicated jobs to do and they are interdependent. Where software does the logical operations where hardware provides the physical resources(Memory, CPU, Interfaces, IO) to do the job for softwares. Anomalous behaviour of software can cause problem to the hardware, and if hardware doesn't work properly software output will deviate from its expected result. So, it can hardly be said which has more problems working correctly. Because they need each others support to do the job.
d) Explain the difference between a PC and workstation.
Ans: A PC(Personal Computer) has following components
a) Memory
b) CPU
c) Hard Disk
d) Input Output
e) Few interfaces (Ethernet, VGA/DVI, USB)
whereas a workstation has all components of PCs, but they are more powerful than PCs. Like
a) RAM size is more than PCs
b) Multicore Processors (Octacore/Hexacore)
c) Graphics Processors
d) SSD
e) Additional Interfaces if requred
f) Bigger motherboard to support all high performance components
e) Explain the difference between systems software and application software.
Ans: system softwares are such kind of softwares which makes hardware components working. Like
a) BIOS software
b) Boot loader
c) Assembler
d) Device drivers (Network stack, USB, Audio, Touch pad)
e) Interface drivers
Whwereas application software is a software which is developed to do certain user defined jobs, which generally uses system software to perform. Like, some web application, Microsoft Office, Video Player, Audio player etc.
f) Which two IT infrastructure components are the primary components of client/server architecture?
Ans: Main components of client/server architecture are-
a) A server machine which connects to multiple workstations/PCs
b) Individual workstations/PCs working as clients
2) One of the major issues facing IT managers is TCO
a) Define the term TCO. What costs does it include?
Ans: Totall Cost od Ownership (TCO) is the total calculated cost while purchasing an IT component. It includes Product cost, License cost, training cost, Manual cost, Installation cost and maintenance cost. Maintenance cost includes all costs which is applicable for the entire lifecycle of the component like regular update, version upgrade etc.
b) What other options exist for acquiring technology assets
Ans: Other options are like, outsourcing the service without taking TCO, Contract based order instead of long term.
