Question

I need a short feedback for those two comments in separte:

1:

(Why are there trade offs in choosing a team's size and level of diversity?

There are trade offs in choosing a team’s size and level of diversity because they are both factors that impact a team’s knowledge resources, and its ability to communicate effectively. Larger and more diverse teams bring more to the table. Communication may be more difficult, but it brings more knowledge, contacts and resources. Larger team will have more diversity, but again, this can make it more difficult in communication. This means that language and interpretation could be an issue.)

2:

(What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of co-location? Are there some types of projects for which "virtual teams" are inappropriate?

An advantage of co-location is that it can improve team cohesion and improve relationships. Another advantage is that it gives team members more opportunities for face to face communication and informal interaction. A disadvantage of co-location is that team members may not want to move to a new location and uproot their lives. Also, it can be expensive and can hurt the department where the employee originally came from. Yes, there are some projects for which "virtual teams" are inappropriate. It may be inappropriate when the project requires a high degree of trust or the exchange of a lot of tacit knowledge.)

Explanation / Answer

1. The underlying logic is spot on. Larger the team size, larger is the difficulty to manage the team. If you add a diversity to the equation, it will get more complex. Some additional points could have been added to increase the impact the answer wanted to have. For example, a large diverse team would mean, a variety of diverse opinions on every single point of discussion. You will never be able to come to a decision.

2. The advantages of co-location have been clearly elucidated. More than team members co-location can help in inter-team performance. In some large companies, different teams are located at different floor/buildings hence that interaction does not take place. The disadvantage mentioned is not exactly correct. The disadvantage of co-location is that, since the different team members have varied viewpoints and ideologies regarding their work, conflicts can arise.
