The reason is quite simple. The somatic chromosome number of the Emmer wheat is 28. The somatic chromosome number of the rye is 14. Their gametes will contain: Emmer wheat--14 rye---7 So when these two plants are crossed they produce a sterilehybrid. This is because the chromosomal number[2n] of the two plantsare different i.e.14 and 28. so when the gametes of the two species combine , they giverise to a hybrid---[n] + [n] = 7+14 = 21. This is an odd number and so the hybrid cannot produce gametesas the half of 21 is not a whole integer. so that is why it is sterile and unnable to produce anyoffspringRelated Questions
