When a computer becomes a zombie, it means nothing but a virus has attacked it.

So, we need to get rid of the virus or prevent it from attacking the computer. The following steps can be followed to prevent a computer from becoming a zombie,

1. Keeping the OS updated. The majority of successful infections occur on unpatched machines.

2. Using a firewall software.

3. Using latest version of anti-spyware and anti-virus software.

4. Practice of safe computing methods such as not opening attachments in spam mails, not falling for phishing attacks, not clicking on pop-ups or visiting questionable sites.
