Question

A service process shown above serves two types of customers. Type-1 customers must go through the A-B-C-D-H process route while Type-2 customers must go through the A-B-E-F-G-H process route. The service time for each step is shown below. Step A, 5 minutes per customer Step B, 9 minutes per customer Step C, 15.7 minutes per customer Step D, 13 minutes per customer Step E, 14.1 minutes per customer Step F, 17.1 minutes per customer Step G, 14 minutes per customer Step H, 9 minutes per customer The process operates 5 hours per day If 36% of the customers are the Type-1 customers and the rest are the Type-2 customers, what is the average capacity per day for the service process? You must show your calculation steps on your spreadsheet. Use at least 4 decimals in your calculation and answer The average process capacity is 17.0901 x customers per day

Explanation / Answer

The process followed by Type 1 customer is : A-B-C-D-H

Capacity of this process is determined by the bottleneck activity and bottleneck activity is the one which takes maximum time to process a customer. In this case , the bottleneck step is C which takes 1 5.7 minutes per customer.

Therefore , processing capacity of A-B-C-D-H is 15.7 minutes per customer.

Therefore number of Type 1 customers processed in a day of 5 hours or 300 minutes = 300/ 15.7

The process followed by Type 2 customers is A-B-E-F-G-H

Capacity of this process is determined by the bottleneck activity and bottleneck activity is the one which takes maximum time to process a customer. In this case , the bottleneck step is F which takes 17.1 minutes per customer

Therefore , processing capacity of A-B-E-F-G-H 17.1 minutes per customer

Therefore number of Type 2 customers processed in a day of 5 hours or 300 minutes = 300 /17.1

Since 36% of customers are type 1 customers and 64% of customers are Type 2 customers ,

Average number of customers processed in a day

= 36% of 300/15.7 + 64% of 300/17.1

= 0.36 x 300/15.7 + 0.64 x 300/17.1

= 6.878 + 11.228

= 18.106 customer

THE AVERAGE PROCESS CAPACITY = 18.106 CUSTOMER PER DAY

THE AVERAGE PROCESS CAPACITY = 18.106 CUSTOMER PER DAY
