1. How would you assess the attractiveness of the circus industry in the early 1980s? What would you conclude from your industry analysis?
The circus industry is overall quite motionless in the early 1980, however, few ambitious individuals started developing this industry by discovering various art forms
There are several things which show that this industry was not doing well:
• In beginning of 1980s , the traditional circus industry was involving many other types of new entertainment industry, like video industry, internet game industry, sports etc.
• The traditional circus companies were restricted by the traditional factors, such as animals, famous clowns, concessions etc. They had to experiment a lot to entertain people which even included taking more risks and putting the lives of workers in danger.
• The tradition circus companies started to quest the cost reduction which resulted in to ticket price fighting. This price war and low profit initiated the downfall of industry.
Still some innovators were keen to develop this industry by evolving art forms such as street entertainment, light and sound shows etc
• Guy Carton opened a circus school in 1979 to provide resources to circuses.
As a conclusion, Circus Industry was stagnant and modernization was happening slowly. All the traditional circus companies were competing with each other on price in a market which was shrinking. They were dependent on famous stars. Overall the traditional circus industry was not attractive
2. What were the factors the traditional circus companies competed on? What do you like or dislike about the traditional circus?
The traditional circus companies were not focussing on enhancing and refining the play experience or the play itself but were competing on developing famous clowns and beast All the plays were mostly out-dated and were happening from long time.
The famous stars were intensely increasing the cost. Audience were not getting satisfied with the level of entertainment and humor in the acts. Kids were also slowly shifting their interest towards video games etc.
The biggest problem was with animals as healthcare was expensive. Animal preservationist were protesting against the harsh animal training and preparation for acts. Even Parents were not preferring to take their kids to such shows , fearing that it might be disturbing.
