Question

A. How long does it take for a packet of length 1,000 bytes to be delivered from the sending host to the receiving host over a link of distance 4,800km, propagation speed 2.4x10^8 m/s, and a transmission rate of 2 MBps? B. More generally, how long does it take a packet of length L to be delivered from the sending host to the receiving host over a link of distance d, propagating speed s, and transmission rate R bps? C. How long does it take for the first bit of the packet to arrive at the receiving host (start to count the time when the sending host starts to transmit the packet)? D. How long does it take for the last bit of packet to be put on the link (start to count the time when the sending hosts starts to transmit the packet)?

Explanation / Answer

1)

Packet delivery time = Transmission time + Propagation delay

Packet transmission time = Packet size / Bit rate

                                         = 1000/(2*10^6)

                                        = 5*10^-4 sec

Propagation delay =Distance / propagation speed

                              = (4800*10^3)/(2.4*10^8)

                               = 2*10^-2 sec

Hence Packet delivery time = 5*10^-4 + 2*10^-2

                                             = 2.05*10^-2 sec

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2)

Packet delivery time = Transmission time + Propagation delay

Packet transmission time = Packet size / Bit rate

                                       = L/R

Propagation delay =Distance / propagation speed

                             = d/s

Hence Packet delivery time = L/R+d/s sec

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

c)

The first bit of the first packet takes only transmission time.

Hence packet delivery times is = Packet size / Bit rate

                                                 = 1000/(2*10^6)

                                                 = 5*10^-4 sec

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d)

The last bit of packet to be put on the link is sum of transmission and propagation.

=5*10^-4 + 2*10^-2

= 2.05*10^-2 sec
