For a class of 71 students, would two be an unusually high number who were born on the 4th of July? B. For a class of 71 students, would two be an unusually high number who were born on the 4th of July?

Explanation / Answer

a) as probability of being born on 4th July p=1/365

threfore mean number born on the 4th of July in class of 71 students =np =71*(1/365)=0.1945

and std deviation =(np(1-p))1/2 =(71*(1/365)*(364/365))1/2 =0.4404

b)

as 2 falls (2-0.1945)/0.4404 =4.1 std deviation away from mean ; therefore it is an unusually high number for  born on the 4th of July out of 71.
