Question

Excel 2011 doesn't automatically convert dates from "May 1, 2007" to "1-May-07"

Original Title: "Excel Date Format Problem"

I am using the latest version of Excel (14.1.3) on OS 10.7 (Lion) and am having a huge problem with Datses. I have formatted a column of cells to the 1-Jan-01 format, but when I type in aa date, say "May 1, 2007", it doees not convert it to 1-May-07 but instead simply treats it as text. If I sort the column, it sorts alphabetically.

There isn't anyway I can seem to get dates to be recognized as dates and not text???.

Explanation / Answer

Since opening Excel in a new user did not fix the problem, the trouble is not a preference file. The next thing to do would be a complete remove and reinstall.

In order to have a successful reinstall of Microsoft Office you must completely remove Office 2011 and then reinstall. Follow the instructions in the link carefully.

Allow AutoUpdate utility to do its work when it comes up at the end of the installation process.

Then run a font utility such as Font Book application to validate ALL your fonts. Delete older editions of duplicate fonts. Delete fonts that do not completely pass validation. Then restart your Mac and immediately empty the trash to get rid of the bad fonts.

Tip: After each system update, be sure to run Disk Utility tto veriffy the startup volume and repair disk permissions.
