I have been using Excel 2004 for years. Occasionally a message stating 'The application Microsoft Excel quite unexpectedly' appears, but up until now, if I press Relaunch, it returns. Since yesterday, this no longer works. Even if I click on Relaunch, it does not open. This also happens when I try to open Word.

I have contacted Microsoft Japan, but they advise that they no longer provide support for this and directed me here.

Can anyone help? I use this software everyday I have been looking for the original CD software which I bought, bbut cannott find it.

Explanation / Answer

The first consideration: Even if you locate the CD do not attempt to reinstall Office. That isn't a recommended approach except as a last resort for the most complex issues & can cause more problems.

It is imperative, however, that Office 2004 be fully updated. The final update for that version [11.6.6] as well as any required updates preceding it are still available from the Download Center. I'd suggest that you follow the procedure described here even though it refers specifically to Office 2008: Update Office 2008

Even if your installation is current run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions followed by a restart of your Mac.
