Question

I have a worksheet that has calculations that include a cell that could either contain a number, fraction or percent. However, I would like to have that cell display the string as entered, e.g. "1/9" instead of the result "0.11111111".

Is there a way to set the cell, only thgat cell not the entire worksheet, to show the value instead of the result?

In the alternative, could I format the cell as text, so it ddisplays as I want it to, but in the formula referencing the cell, tell the formula to evaluate the cell as a number?? I use FileMaker Pro a lot, and it has a very handy function that does exactly that. It would be great if I could do something similar in Excel.

Explanation / Answer

One way is to format columns C and D as fractions with custom number format 0000/0000. Excel will then allow you to enter your numbeers as fractions and will display them in thousands, but will will automaticallyr convert the fraction to the least common denominator. Alternatively, you can format columns C and D as decimal or percentage if you prefer. Delete Column F altogether. Then click anywhere into the data, and go to the Tables tab of the Ribbon. Click the New button to turn your range into a Table. In Cell F1 type Tract Net Revenue and then press Return. The table format will automatically fill down and cell F2 is selected. Without clicking anywhere else first, press the equal sign and then click into cell C2, then press the asterisk * and then click into cell D2 and then press Return Excel will complete the formulas for you. Notice that the value is displayed in the table, but when you click on a value you can read how it was computed in the formula bar.
