Question

Employment Standards Act Exercise:
You have just been hired as the General Manager for a non-unionized manufacturing firm with 75 full-time employees, along with a small retail outlet at the same location to sell to consumers in Hamilton. What does the Employment Standards Act say you should do about the following situations?

You have an employee who rushes in and requests emergency leave for the day to rush a sick child to the hospital in Toronto. You suspect she is falsifying the situation (it has occurred in the past).

You currently provide a paid, half hour lunch break for your employees. Recently, they have been requesting that you also pay for a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon. You think one break might be a good idea, but you can't afford to hire additional personnel to cover for the breaks.

A young woman who works in your retail facility has been complaining about your company’s vacation practices, stating at her previous job at another company she could book vacation time whenever she wanted too. What are her rights in respect to vacation time under ESA?

One of your supervisors sent employees home after 2-hours from their regular scheduled 8-hour day due equipment breakdowns relating to the poor maintenance of the machines in the plant. The affected employees are now demanding they get paid for their entire 8-hour shift.

The retail manager comes to you and asks whether they can deduct cash shortage amount from the wages from an employee who had cash missing from their cash register. This employee is the only one who has access to the cash register on their shift.
