Question

A service process shown above serves two types of customers. Type-1 customers must go through the A-B-C-D-H process route while Type-2 customers must go through the A-B-E-F-G-H process route The service time for each step is shown below Step A, 8 minutes per customer Step B, 9 minutes per customer Step C, 12.7 minutes per customer Step D, 15.2 minutes per customer Step E, 11.9 minutes per customer Step F, 15.9 minutes per customer Step G, 21.4 minutes per customer Step H, 8 minutes per customer The process operates 9 hours per day If 52% of the customers are the Type-1 customers and the rest are the Type-2 customers, what is the average capacity per day for the service process? You must show your calculation steps on your spreadsheet. Use at least 4 decimals in your calculation and answer The average process capacity is customers per day

Explanation / Answer

Type 1 customers will take a total time of

(8 + 9 + 12.7 + 15.2 + 8) = 52.9 minutes to pass through the process

Type 2 customers will take a total time of

(8 + 9 +11.9 + 15.9 + 21.4 + 8) = 74.2 minutes to pass through the process

Now the total time the process operates is equal to 9 hrs. = 540 minutes

Now let the total number of customers be X

Therefore, Type 1 customers = 0.52X
Type 2 = 0.48X

NOW in 9 hrs. , A can allow approx. (540/8) = 67.5 customers

B can allow 540/9 = 60 customers

These 2 along with H is a shared resource

Now since B can allow 60 customers in 9 hours. Max capacity is 60

Now Type 1 customer has another process time of (c and D) = 12.7 + 15.2 = 27.9 mins /customer

So in 540 minutes, out of 60 customers entered through B, it can allow 540/27.9 = 19.3548 customers

Now Type 2 customer has another process time of (E F and G) = 11.9 + 15.9 + 21.4 = 49.2 mins /customer

So in 540 minutes, out of 60 customers entered through B, it can allow 540/49.2 = 10.9756 customers

Hence the average process capacity is 19.3548 + 10.9756 = 30.3304 customers
