Confirmation E-Mail: Religious Bias in Clothing Denial?

At a Workforce Management Conference on March 13, you heard attorney Emily Farnsworth tell the audience about a recent court case involving the clothing of employees. It seems that the Philadelphia Police Department denied a Muslim officer's request for permission to wear a traditional headpiece or "khimar" while on duty. The Police Department said it violated the department's uniform policy. The officer sued claiming religious bias.

The judge ruled in favor of the department and dismissed Officer Kimberlie Webb's religious bias claims. To be most effective, said the court, the Police Department must subordinate individuality to its primary mission of protecting the lives and property of Philadelphia citizens. The defense had argued that the prohibition on officers' wearing of religious attire was intended to maintain religious neutrality. The conference speaker said that the judge's ruling gives confidence to public employers that courts will uphold workplace clothing rules if the employee's appearance is essential to the service the organization provides to the public.

You would like to use this information in a presentation you will make before your company's management council, but you want to check it first.

Your Task. Write an e-mail to Emily Farnsworth (..h@wiley.com) confirming what you heard. Add any necessary information.

Subject: OFFICER KIMBERLY WEBB’S RELIGIOUS BIAS CLAIM.

Dear Attorney Emily Farnsworth,

I am working on a presentation on workplace clothing rules to be made to my company’s management council on 20th March, 2016. As part of my preparation, I have been attending workforce management conferences that have provided me with the necessary insight on the issue. Of particular interest is the Workforce conference you attended and addressed on 13th March, 2016 where you talked about a court case involving employee clothing.

It is in this regard that I would like you to confirm to the facts describing the case as heard from you. Apparently, the Philadelphia Police Department denied a Muslim officer the permission to wear a traditional headpiece of Khimar while on duty arguing that such dressing violated the Department’s uniform policy. The officer, Kimberly Webb sued the department claiming religious bias. The verdict of the court was that to be most effective, the police department must subordinate individuality to its primary mission of protecting the lives and property of Philadelphia citizens thus dismissing the officer’s religious bias claims. Besides, the defense held that the prohibition of officers wearing religious attire was in keeping with the policy of religious neutrality.

Your remarks were that the ruling of the judge gives confidence to the public employees that the judiciary will uphold workplace clothing rules if the employee’s appearance is essential to the service the organization provides to the public. As senior attorney, I believe that your judgment about such issues is well informed and thus would appreciate if you confirmed to this statements.

Please note that I will professionally use the information so provided solely for the purposes of the presentation to give weight to my statements. I appreciate your continued support and contribution to the legal fraternity in our state. Thank you for your swift response.

Kind regards,

PLEASE RATE THE ANSWER AS THUMBS UP. THANKS A LOT
