Question

DESCRIPTION

Most traditional print newspapers are suffering significant transformations, mainly challenged by financial troubles and, above all, changes related to new technologies and new consumption habits. Could you share with us any of these transformations through a particular case? (You can choose as example a particular newspaper taken from the market that you will analyze on Assignment 1). Some experts consider that traditional print newspapers will disappear shortly; others, like Jeff Jarvis, that some will coexist with their digital versions (at least in the near future). What do you think? How do you “envision” the newspapers of 2025? OUTCOMES

1) Describe –briefly– a particular case (it can be based on a news article) related to the changes that traditional newspapers are experiencing. You can focus on one or more of the following aspects: Business models (business strategy) Digitalization / Introduction of technology Content production (new routines) and distribution (new platforms) Relationship with readers (and their consumption habits) Relationship with advertisers (new opportunities to sell them ad spaces, etc.) (…)

2) Even though we’re not visionaries, how do you think that print newspapers will be in 2025?

Explanation / Answer

1) In the age ICT devices and digitization of content, it is imperative that the traditional newspapers are facing rapid decline and some even ending their print version, such as The Independent in UK. Being online reading much affordable and accessable, the way to acquire information is moving towards online content. This has led to change in the business model of several newspaper publishers.

Taking account of print version, 80-85 % cost is form printing and distribution while revenue comes majorly from advertising, partnership, e-commerce and newspapers selling. In case of online, there is no print cost and distribution very seamless and throughout through internet. Further most of the advertising has taken the online route in recent times. The above all changes is not only about newspaper publishers changing strategy but also much attributed to reader's changing habit in the age of internet search. Instead of perusing general interest publications, such as newspapers, readers are more likely to seek particular writers, blogs or sources of information through targeted searches, rendering the agglomeration of newspapers increasingly irrelevant.Even open journalism projects like Wikipedia have contributed to the reordering of the media landscape, as readers are no longer restricted to established print organs for information.

Another platform for distribution that has taken shape in the recent times is social media. Is has become mass distributer of information though the veracity of much of its information and content is still debatable. Another negative aspect of the social media is that, news are governed by emotional outbusts and followers they create. It has also given window to coopted journalism and plaigarism. This has thwarted many publishers of their revenue. This has led to subscriber based business model providing access though paid apps or paid digital media, e.g. Wall Street Journal.

The relation with advertisers is also changing, with more and more avertisers coming on digital platform and using Big Data and AI to target their prospective customers with intelligent adverytising. Newspaper site has become great platform for the advisors to advertise their content.

2) The future of traditional newspaper is towards digitization and online content. With changing reader's habit, adaption of new technology and better coordination for various journals and information online, such as media, maps, data(all in one comprehensive content), the mass will choose digitization over print publications. Nevertheless, it is clear social media is the future of news, being a fast, accessible, near-universal means of communication.
