Culture derives from the Latin word cultura which means to cultivate in English. In a refined sense it could be attributed to a civilised state of life and civilizations differ from country to country and region to region. Culture refers to the norms, customs, artefacts etc. that pave way for the community that live together for a very long time and these are passed down from generation to generation. In a broad sense it includes food, dress, religion, festivals, family style, entertainment, sports, arts etc. Culture is central to any community that live together, share together and protect together. They share uniform moral, ethical and community values.
People who belong to a particular culture follow uniform practices in terms of food, dress and even language. This uniformity binds them together and helps them fight for the welfare of those who belong to the culture. Symbols and artefacts play a major role in connecting and binding people together. They pay utmost respect to these symbols and artefacts. There are two major cultural societies, individualistic and collective.
Individualistic cultures strive hard to promote individual wellbeing and ignores the interest of others. An individual has all the rights which even the parents cannot question. The individual also creates their own subculture such as hippie, LGBTQ etc. that got deviated from the popular cultures but the chances are more that they would also be accommodated after certain time. It promotes nuclear family set-up where people live in closely knit family units without much contact from other people.
Collective culture on the other hand refers to the traditional joint family system and where everyone feel like one family. The whole community would know each other and do not hesitate to help each other in times of struggle. They hold helping others within and outside their homes as their highest values. When one struggles everyone in the culture make decisions collectively and help the person come out of that struggle.
Apart from these societal cultures, there are also corporate culture which is practiced in companies and organisations which is developed over a period of time as the company or organizations grew. The corporate culture differs from company to company and country to country. It’s very unique and independent which cannot be influenced by the country they operate in because people from different cultural background would work in a company thus developing a common corporate culture thus becomes very essential to treat everyone equally.
Finally understanding the cultural differences becomes very important at this technological and digital world by overcoming the stereotypes that we hold about other cultures. Each culture from their point of view is very important, thus respecting other culture becomes the need of the hour.
