ACTIVITY 2.3.2 DISASTER AT THE BAKERY The fire at the bakery was a disaster for T & S Provisions Ltd. Ell Tarranto, the chief executive, had been called by the fire services officer, at 3 a.m. "The whole building is up in flames - we have not been able to save anything he had shouted down the phone. The next day, as Eli waited for his staff to turn up for work outside the burnt- out bakery, he was starting to form a plan. He contacted his friend who owned a s competing bakery and the estate agent from whom he had bought the land for the bakery four years ago. The bakery owner agreed to allow Eli to use one of his spare ovens if he sent his own workers to operate it. This would give him about 50% of his normal capacity. The estate agent suggested that Eli rent an empty depot on the other side of town for three months. He thought it would take around two weeks to have this equipped as a temporary bakery When workers started to arrive, Eli gave them clear instructions. They were shocked by the state of the building, but they were willing to help in this crisis. Six of them were sent to the friend's bakery to start organising production. Two were sent to the vacant depot and had instructions to start cleaning the premises. The remaining three workers were to help Eli salvage what he could from the office records of the burrnt out building. Before this could start, Eli telephoned all of his major customers not leave it to his sales manager -to explain the extent of the problem that some production would be back on stream as soon as possi suppliers to inform them of the disaster, to reduce order sizes and give them the new temporary address for deliveries. -he did and to promise ble. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Eli Tarranto using an autocratic leadership style.

Explanation / Answer

Autocratic leadership style can be term philosophical term called Dictatorship.   In this type of management style the authority to make decision will be in one person hands. That person will take the all decision related with project or business without involvement of group members.

Characteristics of Autocratic leadership

Advantages:-

Disadvantages

In this situation the autocratic leadership style is important because Eli was the chief executive in that bakery and he have to take decision to minimize the impact disaster on the customer demand/requirement as per previous orders. He has to manage the manpower also because he was paying them for work which was under disaster. So he took the decision the few will work on his friends bakery and few of them will work to clean and organize the vacant space for bakery development after that rest of them were with him to bring the material from burnt bakery.

In this manner he tries to focus on production and tried to connect with customers and asked for extra time to complete their orders.

An advantage of Autocratic in this case is that there is need of decision on spot. There is no time to discuss the complete plan with the group. On spot decision will continue the productivity.

Disadvantage of this leadership is that the Eli should confirm first the amount sale order with help of sales manager to assign there worker for productivity. That could waste the usage of manpower inappropriate manner. Suppose there are no orders for next 2 weeks and the raw material was under procurement. So there is no need to waste time on burnt bakery. He should continue to develop bakery.
