Question

1. Describe the relationship between magnesium and the function/health of the heart.

2What is the relationship between sodium and water balance, and how is that relationship monitored as well as maintained in the body?

3.Within what plysiologicl system do sodium, potassium, and calcium interact? What are the individual roles of these minerals in this system?

4.In terms of total amounts in the body, calcium and phosphorous are the first and second most abundant minerals, respectively. Name two ways in which phosphorous and calcium are alike and two ways in which they differ.

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1) Magnesium is important for coordinating the activity of the heart muscle/
Magnesium helps in nerve conduction thorught the body and also in  nerves that initiate the heartbeat and prevents arrhthmias.
Magnesium prevent spasm of coronary muscles
Magnesium relaxes the muscles to control blood pressure.
Hence, Magnesium is related to health of heart.

Answer 2) Sodium and water both are important for fluid balance in the body. Water tends to move from high water concentration to low water concentration. When body experiences dehydration, water is retained in the body and sodium is excreted. When there is excess fluid in the body, sodium is retained and high amout of water is excreted from the body.
Osmoreceptors detect the changes in plasma osmolarity. When there is high solute concenteration, ADH is released from posterior pituitary and water is retained in body. Whne there is excess fluid in body, Aldosterone is released from adrenal gland and act upon kidneys to retain sodium in the body.

Answer 3) Sodium, potassium, and calcium interact in nerve conduction and generation of action potential.
Sodium : It is responsible for depolarization of cell. It increased the positively charged ions in the cell by inward flow.
Potassium : Potassium helps in returning the electrochemical gradient to the resting state.
Calcium : It is the cheif element that stimulate the release of neurotransmitter that binds to post synaptic membrane to carry nerve impuse.
