Question

A clinical scientist executes an experiment with Erythrocytes isolated from 3 different patients. Sample 2 is from a normal patient, but sample 1 and 3 are from patients suffering from two different diseases. The data shown are the % of RBC’s that show hemolysis when exposed to different % NaCl solutions. This is called an Osmotic Fragility.

% NaCl   Sample 1      Sample 2      Sample 3

E.   Assuming you were the scientist that obtained these results, In other words, provide first a brief overview of what the graph tells you ( in other words, observe and explain what and why normal RBC’s behave in these NaCl solutions and then compare your diseased RBC’s with your control)

Secondly, do some research and tell me what the two diseases could be and provide possible explanations for the results.

Explanation / Answer

The 0.80 and 0.90 % salines are denoting isotonic solution where thre is no changes in RBCs but in other solutions it was in hypotonic condition where RBC shrinkage occurred. Sample1 has macrocytic hyperchromic anemia and sample 3 has microcytic hypochromic anemia.
