Sort the statements into those that are properties of integral membrane proteins and those that are properties of peripheral membrane proteins. Integral membrane proteins Peripheral membrane proteins reach through all or part of the membrane can move laterally (sideways) in the hydrophobic part of the membrane attach at the cell membrane surface pump substances across the cell membrane Previous& Give Up & View Solution Check Answer Next Ext Hint

Explanation / Answer

Peripheral membrane attach at the cell membrane surface. They do not span the membrane.

Integral membrane span the membrane completely or partially i.e. reach through all or part of the cell

Since integral membranes span the membrane they have hydrophobic amino acids in the part which spans the membrane and thus they can laterally move in the membrane also.

Since these proteins span the membrane they can also form a channel for polar molecules to pass to the other side of the membrane. They are amphiphillic i.e. contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic amino acids. Hydrophilic amino acids line the inside of the channel whereas the hydrophobic amino acids are outside the channel, the part that interacts with the membrane.
