We want to look at the kidney’s ability to deal with differences in tonicity of ingested solutions – that is of various salt concentrations. To do this we will evaluate data from urine samples in which specific gravity was measured for a hypotonic solution (distilled water), an isotonic solution (0.9% NaCl), and a hypertonic solution (1.5% NaCl). Specific gravity refers to the amount of solute in a fluid. As a fluid increases in specific gravity, it becomes more concentrated with solute. Likewise, a decrease in specific gravity indicates the fluid is becoming more dilute. Data was recorded in 20-minute intervals for 100 minutes total (See Tables 2B.1-2B.3). Generate a hypothesis. Then graph specific gravity vs. time for the three solutions (3 lines on same graph for comparison). Discuss your hypotheses and results.

Explanation / Answer

A) Hypothesis is that the specific gravity of urine will depend on concentration of solute on urine and rate will depend on the volume of solution.

B) results shows that

The large volume of water will increase urine output because of ADH inhibition and decreased specific gravity because of low secretion of solute in urine. And rate will also increase with increase of solution.

With 0.9-/- NaCl, as the solution is isotonic, so the urine rate will increase with increasing volume of solution ingested and no effect on specific gravity.

With 1.5-/- NaCl, as the solution ingested is hypertonic, there will be more secretion of solute in urine which will lead to increase in specific gravity with increase of solute.
