Question

Our perception of a movement often enhances the way in which we perform it, and sometimes how a movement is performed influences our perception of it. Demonstrate the connection between the perceptual and motor systems. A) Name the brain area thought to be responsible for action observation, and give an example of how observation improves performance of one of the six motor skills. B) On the other hand, give an example of how physical practice (learning by doing) enhances performance of one of the six motor skills. C) Finally, give an example of how changing the way a movement is observed affects an individual’s perception of that movement.

six motor skills are

Locomotion

Reaching and/or grasping

Drawing and/or writing

Keyboarding

Speaking and/or singing

Facial expressions

Explanation / Answer

A) The action observation areas are endowed by action execution matching mechanism which is defined as mirror neuron system. The brain area thought to be responsible for action observation is the premotor cortex, the supplementary motor area, the primary somatosensory cortex and the inferior parietal cortex.

The transitional component of locomotion has modulated cortical activity which has been recorded at action observation. The beta bands modulation in superior parietal areas showed that the transitional component of locomotion has induced greater motor resonance than human shape .

The performance of locomotion by observation process is improved by possible central pattern generators which allows the reciprocal activation of flexors and extensors muscle .

B) Physical activity can improve health and quality of life. Young students achieve mature forms in the basic locomotor skills and vary the manner in which these locomotor skills are performed in relation to changing conditions and expectations.

Speed is another skill in locomotion which enhances the performance levels in a variety of physical activities which includes running, learning etc.

C) It is observed thay when individuals are in locomotion state, movement and change are highly valued. Locomotion concerns with psychological change and movement with in a goal pursuit.

Motion sickness is a factor which is certainly going to effect performance involving in locomotion. Locomotion is one of the most studied behaviours in which developmental change is observed.
