Question
Stem cell research remains a hotly debated issue across our nation. Although the science is complex, the research evokes strong passions in people of all walks of life. It encourages us for hopes of cures from dreaded diseases, while requiring us to define who we are as human beings.
The ethical debate over embryonic stem cell research is about whether or not we as a society feel if its okay to destroy a new developing life, in form of a blastocyst, in order to pursue the possibility of future ways to improve the health of other human lives.
What are your views bases on this issue?
Explanation / Answer
Embryonic stem cell research has a moral dilemma.
There are two moral principles in this issue. And stem cell research forces us to choose between two moral principles
1)The duty to prevent or alleviate suffering
2)The duty to respect the value of human life
In stem cell research, it is quite impossible to respect both moral principles.
Benefits: the medical potential of embryonic stem cell research and cultivation, especially somatic gene therapy for genetic disorders, and the generation of replacement tissues and organs for transplant, these outcomes would be highly valuable.
Cons: Embryos have Status as Human Beings or Persons. So, killing those embryos is not justified.
So the middle way would be allowing embryos to be created so that others' lives can be prolonged, or deaths averted.
