BIOL2930 17 S2 LAB 10 DIGESTIVE ENZYMES POST-LAB [Compatibility Mode] ilings ReviewView Normal Heading No Spacing Heading 2 Experiment #1: You conduct an experiment to investigate the effects of temperature and pH on the action of amylase, an enzyme that digests carbohydrates. After incubating your samples for 1 hour, you use iodine to test for the presence of starch and Benedict's reagent to test for the presence of digested product. Results from this experiment are presented in Table 1 below. Use the data below to answer questions 1 & 2. This is similar to what you did in lab. Refer to your notes. Table 1: Experiment 1 Results Benedict's Test No change (blue) No change (blue) Orange Red lodine Test Test Tube Contents Starch + water Starch + saliva mix (amylase)+HCI Purple-black Starch+ boiled saliva mix (amylase) Purple-black Starch + saliva (amylase) Test Tube # Purple-black 2 4 No change (brown) 1. DBptsj Based on the resulit in Table 1, which tube has the hiehest mount f product byplan what pieces of evidence you have. a. (2pts) Based on the results in Table 1, which tube has portial digestion? Explain what pieces of evidence you have. b. [2pts] Why wasn't there complete digestion in this tube? 2.Explanation / Answer
1. Test tube 4 has highest amount of digested product. Iodine test indicates the amount of starch present in the mixture. Since iodine test has failed in test tube 4, and Benedict's test passes with complete Change in color (which implies starch is digested), it indicates that all the starch has been digested.
2. a. Test tube 3 shows partial digestion of starch. Since iodine test detects starch presence and the iodine test shows positive response, it implies starch is present in test tube 3. Also Benedict's test, which shows the digested content, gave a positive result. This means that some starch is digested. Hence, partial digestion took place.
b. As the amylase was boiled, it got denatured. Iodine can't bond with starch at that high temperature. Hence, there was only partial digestion.
