Question

My textbook says arterioles lack the outer connective tissue and smooth muscle is not thick
Do arterioles lack the outermost connective tissue (supportive C.T primarily collagen) or the elastic connective tissue in the middle layer of arteries? My textbook says arterioles lack the outer connective tissue and smooth muscle is not thick

Explanation / Answer

Arterioles are small arteries that deliver blood to capillaries with diameter of 0.1mm to 0.5mm.

Arterioles are made up of three layers - tunica intima

tunica media

and tunica adventitia

Tunica intima  : from inside out consists of endothelium of single layer squamous cells

subendothelial connective tissue

and internal elastic lamina which is not clearly visible

Tunica media : from inside out consists of thick layer of smooth muscles with connective tissue and few elastic fibres

external elastic laminaon the outer part

Tunica adventitia : consists of connective tissue which merge with the connective tissue with collagen fibres outside the arteriole therefore it is not clearly visible

Arterioles have outer most connective tissue with collagen

collagen is the structural protein and connective tissue is present everywhere in human body
