Question
5 During a procedure called a lumbar puncture, CSF surrounding the meninges is withdrawn with a needle. This procedure generally is performed between L3 and L5. Why do you think the fluid is withdrawn here rather than from higher up in the vertebral column? (Hint: Think about the structure and location of the spinal cord.) a b 13 Often, the sampled CSF is tested for bacteria or viruses if a brain infection is suspected. Why would CSF sampled from the spinal cord give you information about the condition of the brain? Would you withdraw CSF if the needle were accidentally inserted into the epidural space instead of the subarachnoid space? Why or why not? c An individual sustains injuries to only the ascending tracts of the spinal cord. Will this person experience deficits in movement, sensation, both, or neither? Explain. 6Explanation / Answer
5)
A) In some individuals, spinal cord extends uoto L2- L3 level.therefore a line is taken between highest points of iliac spine at L4 level, and is punctered and anaesthetized between L3-L4 level
B) Csf is tested for-
Bacterial- streptococcal meningitis, meningitis caused by neisseria meningitidis, listeria,E.coli, etc.
Viruses- meningitis caused by poliovirus, herpes simplex, togavirus, mumps and echoviruses.
Fungi- cryptococcal meningitis.
C) Yes.
But the needle should not be inserted too deep in the dura mater and shoul be inserted superficially in the epidural space only, the procedure Is same as in lumbar puncute.
Epidual space is used for administration of anastheanaes and analgesics.
6) bith will be affected-
Movements of eyes and head towards( spinotectal tract)
