PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS OF QUESTIONS 1 & 2. Explain please!! I have a quiz soon and I dont understand.
1. Using the following graph, answer the following questions (5 points total)
If a producer wants to have a calving interval of 15 months, and a VWP of 60 days:
a) Write down the gestation length in cows (you can express it in terms of months) (1 point)
b) Calculate when the cows have to be pregnant to achieve this goal (express your result in terms of DIM) (2 points)
c) After the VWP, how many days do the cows have to get pregnant? (2 points)
a) When do the ewes have to be exposed to the male? (indicate which month of the year, remember, it takes at least 1 or 2 estrous cycles for the ewes to get pregnant, estrous cycle in ewes = 17 ± 2 days)
b) Indicate the gestation length in ewes
c) When is the expected peak of lactation in ewes? Express your answer in terms of days after lambing
a) c) d) Estrous cycles- VWP Gestation Day o 50 b) Calving 15 monthsExplanation / Answer
2 a) The gestation length in cows is 9-10 months, similar to human gestation period of 9 months. In some breeds it is 266 days, in other breeds it is little more.
b) If the calving 15 months includes the VWP (meant over here), then at least 3 months should be passed before the cows become pregnant again, and these 3 months the cows should be in DIM or days of milk.
c)The cows have to pregnant at least 90 days after the VWP.
d) 4 estrous cycle will pass, since the estrous length of cows is about 21 days. This number of cycles will be excluding the VWP meant over here.
2a) Most sheep have a breeding season in the autumn, though some are able to breed year-round. So, ewes have to be exposed to males during the autumn season i.e during September or October.
b) The gestation period in ewes on average is 145 days or about 4-5 months.
c) The peak of lactation is expected to be 3-4 weeks after delivery of the lamb i.e at least after 21 days.
d) Most lambs can be weaned at 60 days of age or when they weigh 45 pounds, whichever comes first (though this will vary by breed). Another rule of thumb is three times the birth weight. For, theoretical purpose lambs are weaned when they are of three times of their birth weight. Lambs which are allowed to wean naturally, leave breast feeding after almost 6 months.
