Question
11. A 52 year old female with a past medical history of hypocalcemia, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia presents to the Emergency Department with complaints of right knee pain status post (after) a fall. You examine the knee and notice that the epidermis (skin) have been compromised (damaged) due to major abrasion (scraping) from the fall. Please IDENTIEY the full name of the tissue that has been compromised on her right knee. Be sure to STATE how the tissue was "classified" in your response as a laboratory histologist.Explanation / Answer
The tissue of epidermis is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
This type of tissue is well suited for the area of body facing constant abrasion.the two layers are corneum stratum (consist of dead keratinized cells) and the inner layer connecting to basement membrane(mitotically active).
Two types of squamous epithelia are- keratinized and non keratinized.
Keratinized is present in skin(eg palm of the hand and sole of the foot)
Non keratinized is present in inner linings of buccal mucosa.oral cavity ,vagina etc.
