html assignment 6 Complete each statement appropriate blank explaining the different modes of passive membrane transport by dragging a word or phrase hydrostatic (blood pressure Movement of fluids through a selectively permeable membrane caused by hydrostatic pressure s referred to as-- active transport Fluids and small solutes are forced between cells of the vascular endothelium due to osmotic pressure low Simple diflusion describes the net movement off particles from an area of concentration to an area of concentration high Breaking a stink-bomb in a classroom demonstrates students at the front of the class will be the first to smell the odor, although as the tration Jeventually all students throughout the class will smell the gas equally faciltated diffusion Solutes that cannot pass through the membrane unaided utlize which the solute attaches to a binding site on a carrer and is released on the other in side or the membrane without the need for energy expenditure simple difusion Reset

Explanation / Answer

(a). Movement of fluid through selective permeable membrane caused by hydrostatic pressure is OSMOSIS.

Explanation - osmosis has three components

1. It is always for fluid.

2. Is across semipermeable membrane.( most important).

3. Hydrostatic pressure ie high to low.

(b) fluids and small solutes are moved between cells and endothelium due to - HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE.

Explanation - according to Frank starling law (which governs movement of substance across blood vessels), it is Hydrostatic pressure that is required for transport.

(c). Simple diffusion is delined as movement of particles from HIGH concentration to LOW cconcentration.

(d). Breaking a stink bomb in class.....the answer is SIMPLE DIFFUSION.

Explanation - as stated in previous part (c) simple diffusion is from Hugh to low concentration (NOT require energy). So initially the concentration of stink is higher near bomb and low towards periphery but eventually by simple diffusion the concentration of stink gas throughout room will be same.

(e). Solutes that cannot pass.....answer FACILATED DIFFUSION.

Though it require carrier protein but it is NOT against concentration gradient.
