Question
Current evidence suggests that, at least amongst amateur athletes and body builders, recombinant growth hormone in combination with insulin is the PED regimen of choice.
a)Based on their physiological effects, why are these two hormones desirable as performance enhancing drugs?
b) Why might it be beneficial to take insulin in combination with growth hormone, rather than either hormone individually?
c)Given that these hormone supplements are administered in an entirely uncontrolled environment, what might be some of the potential side effects associated with their use?
Explanation / Answer
A). Growth hormone is anabolic hormone. It increase growth of body tissue, increase muscle mass, bone strength, protein synthesis, blood synthesis. Insulin is also anabolic hormone, it regulate glucose metabolism. It inhibit utilization of protein and lipid for energy (has protein sparring effect) therefore it increase muscle mass, glycogen synthesis. All these lead to increase in muscle mass, increase endurance, strength, better performance.
2. Insulin and growth hormone have synergetic effect ie they amplify each other effort (so indivually they would be less effective). Insulin and growth hormone increase IGF (insulin like growth factor) more when used together. IGF is mediator of growth hormone. Therefore it is beneficial to use both together.
3. Side effects of insulin
Side effect of GH
