Explanation / Answer

Answer

The metacarpal bones, metatarsal bones and phalanges are shorter than ribs and they have length and width approximately similar so they are considered short bones. They have cuboidal appearance.

The bones in hands and feet are considered as long because they has extended longitudinal axis and greater length than width. These bones have rounded shape. They have long shaft and two rounded end called epiphyses.

Ribs are considered as flat bones because, they have flat shape and not the rounded one. They are thin and platelike bones in apperance. Flat bones usually have the function for protectiong of organs and they also provide broad site for muscular attachment. Ribs has broad area and protects the organs in thoracic cavity.

Hence, these bones are classified as they are.
