Activity 2: Paradigm Shifts
Context: The phrase “paradigm shift” is used all of the time; famous examples include the paradigm shift from the physics of Newton to that of Einstein and the paradigm shift from Ptolemy’s “Earth Centric” view to Kepler’s “Sun at Elipse Foci” view. Sometimes, though, a paradigm shift can occur in business such as the development of “fast food” or the development of “container” shipping or the “invention” of the internet, or even that of the “post-it note.” But what about paradigm shifts in your own profession?
Description: Craft a post (100-150 words) in which you describe a paradigm shift (and all of its consequences) in your own profession. Based on your description and knowledge, what future effects of this paradigm shift do you predict?
Explanation / Answer
'Paradigm shift' is primarily a phrase which was coined to effectively describe a massive change in practices, fundamentals in science and as well as how the people's outlook changed in accordance with these developments.
There has been an observable change in how people simulate and handle data. This has come about due to numerous factors, mainly, development of new computer architecture, programming languages and the idea of approaching new frontiers with an interdisciplinary perspective.
Programming languages which are used for developing new and efficient algorithms have been revamped to include new compilers to handle bigger codes, but these codes can only be executed on systems, which are capable of doing multiple processes at a single instant. These are called 'clusters'. With the development of clusters, that is nothing but multiple cores on a single machine executing a huge set of data.
This allows multiple users to process data at the same time on the same cluster, mainly due to multiple cores and get the results in a rather short duration of time.
A huge part of NMR spectroscopy relies on simulating spin systems by analyzing their spectra. Programming languages like simpson, DMfit, Gamma programming have been devleoped to simulate large spin systems and see the effect under various parameters. This, again, cannot be done without revamping the computer architecture.
In the future, such a pradigm shift will only help us simulate much complicated systems and date to only help us predict better.
