Question

5 The condition known as ventricular septal defect is characterized by the presence of a hole in the interventricular septum. How would this condition affect the norm oxygenation of the blood? al pattern of blood flow? What effect would this have on the 6 While in the hospital recovering from her heart attack Ms. F. developed a condition known as atrial fibrillation, in which the myocytes of the atria depolarize and contract individually. How are the cells of the heart supposed to contract? (Hint: Think about the functions of the intercalated discs.) Why would it impair the functions of the heart as a whole to have cardiac myocytes contracting individually?

Explanation / Answer

in a normal heart, the pressure is naturally higher in the left hand side of the heart than the right if u have VSD .as a result, some oxygon rich blood will pump into the right hand side of the heart, instead of flowing into the aorta.this means that the right ventricle has to work harder to pump the extra blood into the lungs and pulmonary artery .high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery is called pulmonary hypertension which can permanently damage the lungs if it isn't treated.

at the same time, the left ventricle must work harder to compensate for the blood into the right ventricle-ensuring that enough blood is reaching the rest of the body.
