Question
1A. Light skinned people are at greater risk for malignant melanoma because
A.UV light interferes with vitamin C production in the skin, so people of the southern climates have more melanin in order to ensure adequate levels on vitamin C
B. People of northern climates historically have had less sun exposure and decreased skin melanin content is necessary for Vitamin D production
C. The ethnic differences in melanin skin content result from purely random mutations and have no particular advantage.
1B. If melanin is so important for protection against mutagenic UV exposure, why is it that some people are light skinned and obviously deficient in melanin?
Explanation / Answer
Answer
1A. Light skinned people are at greater risk for malignant melanoma because :
- Melanin is the pigment responsible for dark skin colour. Melanin also protects our skin from ultra violetrasiation that comes from sun rays.
In light skinned people, there is much less melanin, and when they get repeated exposure to sunrays and UV radiation, they are at greater risk of for malignant melanoma.
UV radiations tend to breakdwon folate (follic acid) in body, resulting in anemeia. Follic acid is very important for DNA replication and cell division. Hence, UV radiations are capable for causing skin cancer.
1B. If melanin is so important for protection against mutagenic UV exposure, some people are light skinned and obviously deficient in melanin becuase :
- Nature selects melanin according to people getting exposed with sun light. In northern lattitudes, solar radiation is very weak. There is natural low production of melanin when UV radiation is weak. This phenomenon helps vitamin D production in the body and prevent diseases like osteoporosis and rickets.
Option B) People of northern climates historically have had less sun exposure and decreased skin melanin content is necessary for Vitamin D production
