Question

Each year when you visit your doctor for a physical, many measurements are recorded. These values are tracked over the years and give us the basis for assessing our health. Identify three examples of biometric measurements taken on the body. Select one of the three measurements to describe in detail. Be sure to include a description of the device or test used to take the measurement, identify a healthy range (if one has been established) for your age, gender, etc. and which health behaviors have a positive and negative affect on this biometric. Summarize this information in 300-500 words. Save and submit your assignment as a PDF using the Browse My Computer button to attach. Remember to click submit!

Explanation / Answer

Biometric measurements are done to determine the condition of health.

3 examples of biometric measurements taken on the body to assess health condition are BLOOD PRESSURE, BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL and BLOOD LIPID LEVEL.

Blood glucose level determines the diabetes risk. The normal range of blood sugar level in adult after 8 hours of fasting should range between 70 to 99 mg/dL and after taking carbohydrate rich food it should be less than 120 mg/dL.

Blood lipid profile test determines the risk of heart disease. The lipid profile test detrmines the triglycerides level, total cholesterol level, HDL(High density lipid that is good cholesterol) and LDL( Low density lipid that is bad cholesterol) level.

The normal range of triglycerides in adult must ranges between 100 to 150 mg/dL.

Total cholesterol in adult should be less than 200 mg/dL

HDL in adult should be greater than 60 mg/dL.

LDL in adult should be less than 100 mg/dL.

The normal blood pressure in adults both for male and female is 120/80 mmHg. 120 denotes the systolic pressure( pressure in the blood vessels when heart is pumping) and 80 denotes the diastolic pressure ( pressure in the blood vessels when heart rests between beats).

BLOOD PRESSURE :

To measure blood pressure, the device sphygmomanometer is used. It is used in millimeters of mercury(mm of Hg).

The blood pressure for children is lower than adults and teenager and with age it increases. At old age, blood pressure is slightly higher than that of adults. This is due to decrease in elasticity of blood vessels.

The blood pressure level is same for both men and women. But after menopause, the blood pressure increases in women, even higher than that of men.

Positive emotion, healthy diet, exercise are the health behavior, that has positive effects on blood pressure.

Smoking, taking unhealthy diet and anger has negative effect on blood pressure.
