Shorty George Snowden
It is not often that cultural characters in the field of dance are recognized or celebrated. George Snowden alias Shorty ranks top among the most famous dancers from late 1920s to early 1930s for his contribution in developing the original Lindy Hop dance at the Savoy Ballroom. He was barely 5 feet tall and therefore the name Shorty and he used his small stature to add comedic effect in his dance moves. He reined the dance champion until 1935 (Dias, 2011). Together with his partner Mattie Purnell, George Snowden created one of the most influential dances The Lindy Hop and he led the first professional Lindy Hop dance performed by the Shorty Snowden Dancers in Paradise Club in the downtown New York City. The dance is also known as Jitterbug or Jive or Swing. This dance influenced many more dances such as Mambo or Salsa, Hustle and West Coast Swing among others (Spring, 1997).
The dance was different from the other Ballroom dances as it involved couples breaking away , which meant the couple separated at a given time therefore allowing both partners’ improvisation. The dance incorporated European ballroom dancing and African-American dance forms, which was a revolution in the ballroom dancing.
He also had a signature dance that involved walking forward while tucking one knee behind the other and pointing his fingers down. The dance was dubbed Shorty George dance. This dance group was so influence that it makes an appearance in the four major jazz dances; the Shim Sham, Jitterbug Stroll, Big Apple and Tranky Doo(Dias, 2011).
