Antartica:

Antarctica has no local residents; all visitors go for a short duration only. The two group of people can be classified as follows:

The number of tourists is much higher almost 46000 in 2007-2008 compared to the national program associates who are about 4000. The number of tourists has increased by 14% every year thereafter. There is no locals so impact of tourist on locals.

The local impact on the environment was huge due to large ships landing in the area which has 500 plus tourists in each visit. The year 2016-17 saw 44000 plus tourist. The visit of large ships has been stopped as it was also a cause of concern of pollution due to excessive tourists and oil spills.

The tourist causes many damages to the fragile environment dues to following reasons:

Accidents:

Recently a lot of expeditions has visited the Antarctica and most have required rescue, a helicopter came to rescue an expedition and crashed Antarctica. The helicopter recovery from the fragile zone of the Antarctica peninsula is difficult.

1979 saw an aircraft crash TE 901 which flew from New Zealand for sightseeing crashed it was an 11-hour flight with 4 hours over Antarctica sightseeing and crashed due to low visibility on lower slopes of Mt. Erebus 257 passengers died. The flight was suspended and resumed only in 1994 by Qantas.

The local environment is taken care by Antarctica program associates where there has been a problem in the ozone layer causing environmental risks, further some species have become extinct. The natural breeding of birds is endangered by tourists.

A lot of measures are taken to control excessive tourism and to protect the fragile environment, mining and oil exploration is a restriction and large cruise ships are not allowed.
