Question
There is some evidence from researcher Marcel Kinsbourne" that the eyes tend to move to the right when a mental task involves the left hemisphere and to the left when the task involves the right hemisphere. Read the following questions to a friend and closely observe and note any left/right eye movements as they formulate their response to each question 1. Define the word heredity. 2. What is the function of punctuation marks? 3. Which arm is raised on the Statue of Liberty? 4. On a computer keyboard, is the "Q" key on the left or right? Given what you know about hemispheric lateralization, which questions above should produce eye movement to the left and which questions should produce eye movement to the right? Did any of your observations confirm Kinsbourne's findings?Explanation / Answer
Answer.
Given that the visual sensations are laterally represented in the two hemispheres, the information from the left eye is processed in the right hemisphere and the information from the right eye is interpreted in the left hemisphere. In the light of this scientific observation along with the findings based on a rudimentary experiment with a friend, it is noticed that questions 4 and 5 illicit movement of the eye to both the left and to the right side. This is because question 4, that is about the location of the Sttaue of Liberty in space requires a recall of the orientation of the statue and its extended arm in relation to the viewer and the viewer would there try to imagine the position of the raised hand in both led and right directions. Similarly, the 5th question requires imagining the alphabet Q key in both the left and right side of a keyboard and it thus resulted in left and right eye movements in the friend. Interestingly, since the left hemisphere is known to be involved in language comprehension, the friend was found to show eye movement from the right to left in both the cases which indicates the involvement of the left hemisphere followed by the right hemisphere.
Thus, response to questions 4 and 5 testify to Kinsbourne’s eye movement hypotheses and the friend’s visual motor behaviour was found to confirm Kinsbourne’s finding about the lateralisation of the visual information.
