(Answer) The two step measurement of a property is to first define the property and then detect the property.
Define the property – When one generates an operational definition that will have some validity when the property is being measured, is known as defining the property.
Detect the property – When an instrument is designed, that has reliability and power when a property is being measured, is known as detecting the property.
Operational Definition – When a researcher is using a measurement method to study a subject, the definitions they use for the variables involved would be an operational definition. An operational definition would also specify exactly how each variable is to be measured and/ or manipulated. This would be similar to a “recipe.”
Let us assume that a child has started to throw tantrums after his parents’ divorce. This child has been quite addicted to aggressive video games lately. The degree of the behaviour is measured by how much he played these games before the divorce and how much he played after. The child played for half an hour before the divorce and then began playing for 4 hours straight, right after the divorce.
