Question

Principles of Ecology Class 200+ words please
Scientists often have to decide how to remove bias from experimentation as much as possible. A doctor recently developed a treatment he believes will lower cholesterol levels. He placed an ad and had several people reply that have high cholesterol and would like to participate in this experiment. He's decided to take half of the participants and place them in a control group. The other half of the participants will receive his treatment. How does the doctor decide who gets the treatment and who gets placed in the control group?

Explanation / Answer

Here there is chancea of selection bias where doctor may group those in treatment who may have chances of showing Imprivement not much due to applied treatment but other.

To avoid such bias , doctor must use random selection if participants into control and treatment group. This will significantly reduce the selection bias.

Channeling bias occurs when patient degree of illness dictates the study cohort into which patients are placed. Those with very high cholesterol being placed in treatment would help doctor prove his research. This bias is more likely in non-randomized trials when patient assignment to groups is performed by medical personnel
