In a 3-5 page paper describe the concrete-operational and formal-operational periods. Provide an example from your life that illustrates each stage. After reviewing Gardner and Sternberg’s theories of intelligence describe what you think is missing from each theory, ensure you use outside research to support your thoughts. Explanation / Answer

The concrete operational stage connects to a period in a child's life wherein he/she can think rationally, but only about objects available in their vicinity. However, formal operational stage is one wherein the child is able to think rationally even when the objects are not available in their immediate environment. Examples from my experience could be when I was in the concrete operational stage, i would talk about concepts or people around only at the time of verbalizing, however once I stepped into the formal operational stage, I would even Express through writing about abstract concepts, people, emotions and events. Multiple intelligence framework and different ways of viewing intelligence as a very abstract not absolute concept, this manner of viewing children and their development could be constrained. The reason is that both these kinds of thought may be operating simultaneously it a child in varied degrees and intensities depending on their unique power and ability to grasp concepts. Both heredity and environment essentially play a role in helping individuals develop intelligence. None of their contributions can be undermined, especially given that intelligence is abstract and takes complex mechanisms to develop itself in its entirely. Moreover, yes children with different abilities must be educated in the same classroom and the environment should be enriching enough to provide opportunities of getting access to stimulation for different kinds of intelligence and also incorporate the various learning styles that operate for each person. Integrated classrooms can be useful in that sense, however at times different needs may come in to the way of learning of another. Some children for instance are at a very concrete level of functioning and therefore require individual attention and help in order to compensate for the lags. Therefore a delicate balance needs to be maintained and the environment must be equipped to deal with different needs and varied traits.
