Question

please explain how gender construction around the world is not necessarily the same as western gender construction. Please discuss the different variations that exist and provide specific examples. What causes these variations? In other words, the research indicates that there is a wide range of gender relations cross-culturally and many of them do not show the inequalities that we have in western countries. Please explain why. Please include an explanation of multiple genders in other countries and explain how that works. Why does the US appear to be less accepting of such variations?

(Answer) In most places around the world, gender construction is largely dependent on religion, culture, traditional customs, norms etc. Since the religious and cultural structures of countries around the world are different, it is sure that gender construction is dissimilar as well.

For instance, in America, it is common for a fourteen-year-old boy or girl to be going on dates. It is absolutely for a young teenage couple to go to a local restaurant and enjoy each other’s company. However, in eastern countries like Afghanistan for instance, it would be egregious for a boy and girl of that age to choose a partner of their own liking to go out with and have no particular intention of marrying. In such cultural structures, children have their spouses picked and approved by their parents. This might be based on the level of success, the family’s image and other factors that the parents might find approving.

These contrasting cultural norms are neither wrong nor right. They are a result of years of culture, tradition and religious influence. Happy and miserable marriages and relationships are found in both countries. Abusive and nurturing relationships are found in both countries as well.

For a long time, it has been view as unjust for a man or woman to not be able to choose their own spouse. However, in the east, it might be equally ridiculous to them when a parent approves of a marriage where the couple is clearly not right for each other and might end up getting a divorce inevitably.

When it comes to the issue of multiple genders, certain eastern nations have been far more acclimatised than the west. In a country like India, transgender and hermaphrodites have existed long before transgendered individuals were on magazine covers in the west. Albeit, most parts of the world still need to sort out proper rights for such individuals in terms of finding jobs, acquiring government concessions etc. Perhaps, the commonality throughout the world is that people who are obviously different would need to be treated with more compassion and less discrimination.
