Question

6. Using one of the basic psychological theories of human development (theoretical orientation), very briefly describe how a parent or other caregiver might go about toilet training a young child with the end result being psychological problems (psychopathology). In other words, this child or young adult would end up in our office at some point down the line. Early on, the problems would be with bathroom habits. Later on, the problems would be reflected in a maladaptive personality style. You could describe this in a short sentence.

Explanation / Answer

In Erikson’s "Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt” Stage, children between 18 months and 3 years of age learn to master skills and make decisions. Children view successful toilet training as a step toward building a sense of independence. It is important for parentd to maintain a reassuring, confident attitude when teaching their child to potty train. They should try to refrain from shaming their child when mistakes happen.
