Step 1. The research which is based on knowing about the effect of migration to Florida on older adults can study the following research question:
Does migration to Florida influence the level of stress in the migrant elderly population?
In this study, the independent variable would be the number of older adults who moved from another state to Florida between 1980 to 2018.
The dependent variable would be the participant’s experience of stress which can be determined by physiological ratings such as EEG records, development of any illness after migration, hospital records etc. along with participants’s self reports about their experience of anxiety, feelings of depression, ability to cope with stress.
2. In the experiment to study the effect of Skype use on depression in older adults, the sample of about 300 elderly migrants can be drawn from a major city in Florida, such as Miami using random sampling.
The sample can then be randomly assigned into the two treatment conditions ( control group and the experimental group).
Here, the experimental group would receive the independent variable in the form of training in Skype use and be given a computer to Skype with their family within the privacy of the laboratory room for over a period of three weeks. The control group would receive no such training in Skype or the opportunity to use Skype to communicate with their family. A self report questionnaire before the introduction of the treatment or Skype exposure and after Skype use would be used as the dependent variable to determine the participants’s own ratings about their level of sadness or depression due to the distance from their respective family.
In addition, intervening variables such as age, gender, educational level, major illnesses, employment status will be controlled to avoid these factors from confounding the relationship between the independent and the dependent variable. In this way, the experimental design could help to test the hypothesis about the effect of Skype use on the elder participants’ perception of their depression.
