Question

minitab:

Body measurements of female sparrows:

X1=total length, X2=alar length, X3=length of beak and head, X4=length of humerus, X5=length of keel and sternum; all in mm).

Birds 1 to 21 survived a severe storm near Brown University

in Rhode Island while the remainder died.

1. For the variable Total Length divide into 2 groups: Group A Survived, Group B Not Survived.

a. Provide dot-plots for Groups A & B.

b. Provide box-plots for Groups A and B.

c. Provide histograms for Groups A & B. Mark axes, cut-points, interval width.

d. Develop Normal probability plots for Groups A & B.

e. Based on the results of (a)-(d) , describe your findings:

Which group has the greatest variation? Why?

Which group has the greatest mean length? Why?

Which group displays normally distributed length?

Which group (survived or not survived) has the highest mean length?

Spreading of the presented data; existence of regular/extreme outliers; skewedness of the data; normality of histograms; variability of the data for each group and versa each other.

Explanation / Answer

Group B Not Survived has greatest variation because the values are more wider(From dot plot) as compair to Group A (Survived group)

Group A is normally distributed because the variation in group A is less than group B and also the normal curve of group A is smoother than group B.

Group B has highest mean length.
