Question
Based on an observation that people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have difficulty concentrating while doing math, a psychologist asked the 60 students in his Gen Psychology class to participate in a four day study. In order to not reveal too much about the nature of the study, it was only said that on days 1 and 3, participants would be shown film clips, and on days 2 and 4 they would be given a math test. However, the type of film varied dramatically in order to manipulate the presence or absence of PTSD.One of the movies was kittens frolicking in party hats. The other movie was graphic footagfe from war, violent assaults and horror movies. The order of the movie was determined randomly for each participant. The results showed that there was no difference on the math tests, regardless of whether they were taken after the happy movie or the traumatic movie. The scientist concluded that having PTSD does not lead to difficulty taking math tests. What type of study was this ? What statistical test should have been used ? Identify the ttwo key variables in the relationship that is being tested. If possible, say which was the independent variable and which was the dependent variable. Rank order the problem(s) with the reporters interpretation of the research.
Explanation / Answer
1. This is an experimental study.
2. A t-test should have been used to check if there were any significant differences between the two participant groups.
3. The variables in the study is PTSD and math performance.
4. The independent variable is PTSD and the dependent variable is math performance.
