Explanation / Answer

Ranking of characters from best to worst.

1.Jane has the best character as she transcend the societal norm of sexual convention and decided to sleep with Joe to save Tarzan's life. Her act was unconditional and followed her inner conscience and ethics to save a man's life , even if that meant going against the societal norms of 'what is right and wrong'(sleeping with other men is looked down upon as promiscuous and lack of character) . She defied this and chose to save a person's life.

2.Sam. He decided to beat Tarzan, not out of personal conflict but out of empathy for Jane. His approach to handle the situation was incorrect but his intention was not to hurt Tarzan , but to confront him about his mistreatment towards Jane.

3.Tarzan. Tarzan believed in maintaining relationship through trust and loyalty and took into account the society's definition of 'who is a good and a bad woman' while deciding to break up with Jane. He is what Kolhberg defines as conventional morality.

4.Joe. Joe is what Kolhberg defines as pre-conventional morality which is based on favours i.e. one's act is primarily based on the rewards and benefits they would recieve when engaging in a relationship.

5.Dave. Dave is considered as the most immoral man by me . A person who remains silent at the sight of injustice or inequality is an accomplice. He lacked moral ethics to help Jane who desperately needed help. He could have helped but decided to remain neutral and act like a unethical coward.
