Explanation / Answer

,'Musee des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden.

The theme of the poem is suffering, apathy, old masters, art and truth, war and martyrdom.

In the poem Musee des Beaux arts, W.H.Auden expresses his admiration for the old masters of poetry. The title of the poem refers to the museum of fine arts in Brussels and refers to one of the paintings called "Landscape with the fall of Icarus". This painting is a piece by Pieter Brueghel where Icarus's myth is reflected in the painting. Here, Auden has made a speaker who is expressing his views on most of the paintings, and brings conclusion about the sorrow and suffering shown in the paintings. To others who are not suffering, the speaker refers as being in oblivion or too distracted to focus on such things. He also sights other poems by Brueghel such as Winter Landscape with Skaters and a Bird trap, Massacre of the Innocents, and Numbering at Bethlehem. These highlight the peculiarities in human life, with some people suffering and the others unperturbed.

The question that the poem gives rise to is, how can people ignore the cries and pain of others purposefully?

Also, the speaker talks about the martyrs who carry on on their duties in what so ever condition they are. Also, the author finally states that the average person has to have a routine and is mostly unaffected by any sufferings or cries that the other person is having.

The Dance by William Carlos Williams

Theme : dancing spirit and happiness even amongst bad conditions.

The dance is also about one of the paintings of Pieter Brueghel, where the peasants are celebrating with music, drinking, dancing with a release of the sexual impulse and total involvement to carnival. The name of the poem is The Kermess where the peasants have been shown to enjoy going round and round in jubilant spirit. Williams was fascinated that even after such drudgery in the peasant life, they were able to submit themselves to the spirit of the carnival on a holiday.

Comparison :

Both poems are a written perception of Pieter Brueghel's paintings

In both the poems, the author notice frugality and the poor conditions.

Contrast:

Where, even in the bad conditions, Williams is able to notice the merriness, Auden notices the negative thing, as how people strive to continue even after noticing problems and suffering.

I have given a gist of the two poems highlighting the main poems creating pointers that can help you with the essay. For your essay you can first emphasise about Pieter Brueghel and the theme of his paintings, naming a few. Then you can progress on further elaboration of the summary of the above two poems, and along with the summary you can get pointers to differentiate the two as a conclusion part.
